> Gambler

The shark was nosing at my foot
waiting to devour me.

Should I tread water for a while, keeping my distance,
hoping things aren't as bad as they seem?

Should I swim as quickly as possible
in the other direction?

Should I swim towards the shark, to get a better look,
even if it means losing another piece of my heart?

I'm a gambler.

I swim a little closer
and wait.

The shark gleams in the sun.
Its fins sparkling with new love.
I drink it in, mesmerized,
shake my head and realize -

I'm not stupid.

I back away slowly,
turn around,
and swim like hell.
